The Alliance University continues to respond to the ever increasing challenges by focusing on international students, international linkages, and executive education, through strengthening research productivity. The University has formed the Office of Research and Scholarly Development to organize, coordinate and monitor doctoral studies and research in the University.

Constitution of Office of Research and Scholarly Development

A statutory Committee comprising the following members has been created to maintain the standards, and advise the Academic Council on the trends and developments in doctoral studies and research in various fields.

Research and Scholarly Development Purview

The Research Department sets its focus on:

Doctoral Studies

Research work that receives in-house and/or external research grants

Industrial and institutional consultancy work

Sensitisation of and procedural support for intellectual property rights protection

In addition to voluntary research, the ORSD considers sponsored research and industrial consultancy projects as important means for extending benefit of scientific research work at the University to the external world, for broadening the empirical experience of the faculty community and as a tool of its corporate social responsibility. The ORSD encourages all faculty colleagues at the University to undertake research and consultancy work as a measure of scientific/technical collaboration with external world. The ORSD believes that appropriate research and consultancy, primarily contribute to the enrichment of the professional experience and knowledge of the faculty colleagues and thus make them better educators. Research and consultancy projects provide a firsthand knowledge of the current problems of industry and the emerging areas, which is very helpful in setting the curriculum to the national needs.

Research Productivity at the University

An attempt to index the research contribution of all faculties within the University has given a very impressive picture. It was indexed based on the criterion for a Regular Professor of a Regular University across the 3 academic units, viz., Alliance School of Business (ASB), Alliance College of Engineering & Design (ACED), and Alliance School of Law (ASL).

The Doctoral Programs

The University as of now runs Doctoral Program only in its Alliance School of Business. The aim of the Doctoral Program at the Alliance School of Business is to develop world class researchers whose work will stand up to peer review at the highest levels.

The objectives of the Doctoral Program in Management are as follows.

To develop researchers who are trained in the highest standards of academic enquiry.

To develop future academicians in management who will take their place as faculty members in management institutions in India and abroad.

To develop researchers who will hold the highest standards of integrity in their research pursuits.

The Doctoral Degree Program (Ph. D.) in Management is uniquely oriented toward the application of theory and knowledge derived from research. The program delivers high quality instruction and prepares the doctoral students for rewarding careers through its program of study, research, field study and continuing dialogue with faculty, practitioners, and colleagues. By the end of FY 2014-’15, the Alliance School of Business has admitted 74 students for pursuing the Doctoral Degree Program (Ph. D.) in Management, of whom 23 have successfully completed their Comprehensives.

The Alliance School of Law has launched Doctoral Program in Law in the academic Year 2015-’16. The Doctoral Program in Law received an overwhelming response from the aspirants in the month of June, 2015. 16 students were admitted to the First Batch of the Program through a rigorous selection procedure. The Alliance School of Law shall successfully commence its Doctoral Programme from August, 2015.

Schemes for Participation, Presentation and Publication

The ORSD has liberal schemes for financially supporting participation and presentation of research papers in conferences/seminars, and publication of research works in Academic Journals.

University Publications

One of the principal missions of the Office of Research and Scholarly Development is to facilitate University’s engagement in academic, applied and pedagogical research that are contemporary, relevant and have the potential to contribute to the body of knowledge, solve problems of the real world, and bring about innovations in the learning process. During the FY 2014-’15, the academic community of the University has published about 80 research articles in Journals of repute.

Working Paper Series

Researchers at University are encouraged to make notable contributions to any field of study through this medium. WPS is a platform for sharing original research/study/project findings with colleagues, as well as to test and receive feedback at pre-publication stage. Faculty submissions in soft form adhering to the formatting stipulations would get published under ‘Working Paper Series’ of the University. Every paper is assigned with a permanent number. The opinion(s), view(s) and conclusion(s) expressed in the working paper are those of the author(s) and not that of the University. Every author of a paper would get 10 complementary copies of his/her paper.

Sponsored Projects

Alliance College of Engineering and Design aimed at building skill, expertise and knowledge through their innovation and research initiatives. ACED is committed to achieve technological research development through sponsored projects. Currently the ACED engaged in projects from funding agencies, such as, VGST, Government of Karnataka and Naval Research Board, DRDO, Government of India.

In-house Faculty Seminar Series

The Alliance University reiterates its commitment to the development of its research profile through the launch of the IFSS.

The University visualises presence of a vibrant research culture through the successful conduct of periodic, scheduled, in-house research seminars and conferences with participation from the wider academic society. These may be originated at Department/Area level and conducted at College/School level under the aegis of the Office of Research and Scholarly Development (ORSD).

ORSD conducts seminars on individual researches or eminent researches in-house/external, at least one per week.

Similarly, though not at similar intervals Colleges/Schools put up thematic annual/periodical Conferences to provide a platform for researchers, academicians, planners and policy-makers to come together to share their research findings and experiences that are of contemporary relevance and interest. ORSD encourages all academic Departments/Areas, Library, and non-teaching Departments, such as, CSR, ITS, CAN, International Affairs, Examinations & Evaluation, General Administration, and Admissions to organise Conferences with focus on academic themes. Budget to organise workshops, conferences, consortia, summits, seminars, etc., is put in place by the University to encourage professional development of its HR.

During the AY 2014-’15, 26 talks by the in-house researchers were arranged under the Series.

Alliance Journal of Business Research

AJBR is the result of collaboration between Alliance School of Business and Oakland University, Michigan, USA.

AJBR is a refereed journal and has wide acceptance from academics and practitioners. The Editorial Board is comprised of leading academics from across the world. The review process is quick and objective.

AJBR aspires to be one of the Business Journals of choice for authors, reviewers and practitioners alike. AJBR welcomes contributions from any functional domain. Contributions having an inter-disciplinary approach are especially encouraged.

AJBR wishes to make an impact on key stakeholders. Hence, contributions that have a high practical bias would fit into the journal’s philosophy. This is not to undermine the importance of conceptual research but only to highlight the relative priorities. Any research must of course be rigorous, scholarly and meet the requirements of objective peer review to get published in the AJBR.

AJBR has a double-blind referral process. Reviewers are requested to provide feedback that would facilitate an enhancement in the quality of the submission. Experts in different domains of management are invited to be on the review panel.

AJBR’ next issue, which is Vol. 7 (2), Spring 2015, will hit the stands by the end of August, 2015.

Alliance Anthology of Cases

AAC is a refereed collection of real-world cases. Fictitious or hypothetical cases are discouraged. Cases must be accompanied by Teaching Notes. The Teaching Notes would be provided only to qualified faculty adopting the case.

International Journal of Law and Social Sciences

The Alliance School of Law has launched the International Journal of Law and Social Sciences in July 2015.

The IJLSS aims at tracking the evolution of the concept and development of law in the era of Globalization. IJLSS encourages researches that draw upon the interdependence across law, humanities and social sciences while focusing on thematic areas like, gender related issues, constitutional issues, jurisprudence, intellectual property regime, and contemporary issues that bear economic, political, and social significances.

The objective of IJLSS is to publish articles that inspire the thought, challenges, unquestioned norm and a demand for change in legal thought requiring legal scrutiny and a platform for the development of novel and analytical thinking in the field of law and policy.

Seed-Money Grants

Seed-money grants facilitate the development of larger projects leading to research grant proposals to outside funding agencies. SMG support the initiation of research or innovative scholarship activities that have the potential of generating extramural funding, or an equivalent measure of scholarly achievement in fields where extramural funding is scarce. These grants also support the initiation of research in curriculum development or for training program planning, if such research has the potential of generating external support for the full utilization of the developed curriculum or training program. The project proposal must be new and original and should contain a list of potential extramural agencies that may provide future support for the project.

Short-term Research Fellowships

Collaborative research endeavours with external institutions and individuals. SRFs encourage young researchers even including doctoral scholars to work in their respective fields of interest. Under the project provision is made for local hospitality for a maximum period of 2 months that could be stretched over three instalments, and faculty guidance.
